Theoretical Estimation and Experimental Measurements
of Soret Coefficients for Multi-Component Hydrocarbon Mixtures (2/2)

In this paper, the ratio of the evaporation energy to the viscous energy, which is important in predicting the thermodiffusion phenomenon, has been estimated using three different models. It has been found that this ratio is a function of the mixture component properties such as viscosity, evaporation energy and the mole fraction of the component. This has been established via computational analysis of several binary hydrocarbon mixtures and a comparison with the corresponding experimental results. Investigations have also been made to understand the significance of the appropriate equation of state as well as the fundamental property of the mixture component, viz., and viscosity. For the former, Peng Robinson and Perturbed Chain Statistical Association Theory equation of states have been compared for six different ternary mixtures. The Peng Robinson equation of state was found to be more accurate. The latter had shortcomings due to the oversimplification of the model resulting in inaccurate prediction of density, fugacity etc. In addition, the results of thermal diffusion ratios of three component hydrocarbon mixtures using the principles of molecular dynamics (MD) have been compared with the irreversible thermodynamics (IRT) theory. Finally a detailed explanation of the experiment performed on board FOTON M3 satellite and the planned two Space Station experiments will be presented in details
