Patrick H. Oosthuizen,
P.Eng.

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering,
Queen’s University, Kingston, Ontario, Canada

Patrick Oosthuizen was born and educated in South Africa.  He received his B.Sc., M.Sc., and Ph.D. degrees in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Cape Town and an M.A.Sc. degree in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Toronto.  Dr. Oosthuizen joined the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Queen’s University in 1968.  Prior to joining Queen’s, Dr. Oosthuizen taught for several years at the University of Cape Town.
Professor Oosthuizen’s primary research interests are in the area of Convective Heat Transfer and its applications in Energy Systems.  He has undertaken many studies concerned with fundamental aspects of natural and combined convection.  He has also undertaken research concerned with the applications of heat transfer.  Typical such research includes studies of the freezing of coal during rail transportation, the design of solar crop dryers for use in developing countries, the design of solar energy systems, the prediction of heat transfer through windows, and the heat transfer in fuel cell and reformer systems.  He has received several awards for his research including several Best-Paper awards, the 2001 Jules Stachiewicz Medal for outstanding contributions to research in heat transfer in Canada, and the CANCAM Award in recognition of outstanding achievement and technical excellence in thermofluids engineering.  In recognition of his outstanding record of research, he has been made a Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and of Engineering Institute of Canada.  Professor Oosthuizen has published more than 600 technical papers including a number concerned with engineering education. He has also published textbooks on Compressible Fluid Flow and on Convective Heat Transfer Analysis. Professor Oosthuizen has developed and taught a wide variety of courses at the undergraduate and graduate level.  Students have recognized his expertise and enthusiasm as an instructor resulting in his being a seven-time recipient of the Silver Wrench Award in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Queen’s University, a three-time recipient of the Golden Apple Award from the Queen’s University Engineering Society and a recipient of the Alumni Award for Excellence in Teaching.
