On the use of the k − ε turbulence model for atmospheric
boundary layer flow and wind turbine wakes (2/2)

Recently, Sumner and Masson have reconsidered the theoretical case of neutral surface layer flow under horizontally-homogenous conditions. Typically, use of the Richards and Hoxey boundary conditions yields outlet profiles of turbulent kinetic energy and its dissipation rate that do not obey their analytical solutions in the near-wall region. To remove the presence of streamwise gradients, they have proposed wall-damping style functions to correct discretization errors near solid boundaries which arise when highly non-linear distributions are approximated with piecewise linear functions (ie finite differencing). Using the proposed corrections has been shown to yield truly invariant profiles of U, k and ε. Currently, work is being done to adapt the proposed corrections to more complex flow conditions. All of the above modifications to the standard k −ε model have been unified and implemented in the open-source software OpenFOAM-1.5.
