Christian Masson Professor
B.Eng., M.Sc.A.
(Ecole polytechnique, Montréal),
Ph.D. (McGill University) Mechanical Engineering Department
Ecole de Technolgie Superieure de Montréal, Canada

Christian Masson is a professor at the mechanical engineering department of the École de technologie supérieure. He is the Holder of a Canada Research Chair on the Aerodynamics of Wind Turbines in Nordic Environment. He holds a Ph.D. diploma from McGill University and Master and Bachelor diplomas in mechanical engineering from École Polytechnique de Montréal. He is one of the founder members of the Corus Centre, the Quebec wind-energy research centre and a theme leader for a NSERC network in wind energy. He is an administrator of the TechnoCentre Éolien Gaspésie les îles and has written more than 100 scientific papers published in archive journals and presented at international conferences. He is a member of the editorial board of the international journal Wind Energy, the Canadian representative on the IEC working group PT12-2 and participates to the MexNext Annex of the IEA.
Research Interests:
The research program of Prof. Masson is focussing on major issues addressing the development and exploitation of wind farms where both rotor and atmospheric aerodynamics are playing major roles. The research activities are therefore oriented toward the development of strong and combined expertise from both domains through two major components consisting in (i) advanced aerodynamics modeling, and (ii) testing procedures. In the wind energy research community, the researchers typically specialized themselves in either rotor aerodynamics or atmospheric flows. The research activities of Prof. Masson are an original blend of rotor aerodynamics and atmospheric flows. This imaginative research orientation allows Prof. Masson to develop creative studies such as flow modeling in (i) wind farms, (ii) wind-turbine rotor-nacelle interaction, and (iii) numerical site calibration.
The main research activity is the development of a medium-scale computational fluid dynamics (CFD) method. In term of spatial resolution, this method is a blend between very small-scale modelling typically used for the simulation of the three-dimensional separated flow in the immediate vicinity of a blade and large-scale modeling normally used for the prediction of the atmospheric boundary layer.
